CHAPTER FIRST

There is only one mirror in my house. It hangs in the hallway upstairs behind a sliding panel. Our faction allows me to stand in front of him every second day of the third month, on this day my mother cuts me.

I am sitting on a stool, and my mother is standing next to me and straightens my hair. Strands fall to the floor with a dull light ring.

When finished, mom collects my hair and twists it into a knot. I note how calm and focused she looks. My mother is well trained in the art of immersion in herself. What I can not say about myself.

I furtively examine my reflection when she does not notice this - not because of vanity, but for the sake of banal curiosity. Indeed, much can happen with your appearance in three months. In the reflection you can see a narrow face, wide round eyes and a long thin nose - I still look like a little girl, although a few months ago I turned sixteen. Other factions celebrate birthdays, but we do not. That would be too much.

Well, here, ”she says, fixing the knot in place. Her eyes catch my eye in the mirror. And now it's too late to look away, but instead of scolding me, she smiles at our reflection. I frown a little. Why doesn't she get mad at me for staring at herself?

So today is the day, ”she says.

Yes, I reply.

Are you worried?

I catch my eye in reflection. Today is the day of the ability test, which will show which of the five fractions I have a predisposition to. Tomorrow at the Choice Ceremony, a difficult decision is to be made. I finally decide what I will devote the rest of my life; I will be with my family or leave them.

No, I say. - Tests should not change our choice.

Right. - She smiles. - Get up, let's go have breakfast.

Thank you for cutting me.

Mom kisses me on the cheek and pushes the panel over the mirror. I think that she would be considered a beauty in another world. She is very slender under this gray clothes. She has high cheekbones and long eyelashes, and when she weaves her hair at night, they descend in waves over her shoulders. But this cannot be demonstrated in the Faction of Renunciation.

We go to the kitchen together. This morning, my brother is cooking breakfast, his father is reading a newspaper and his hand is sliding over my hair, my mother sings while cleaning the table - all this happens exactly this morning, when I feel so guilty because I want to leave them.

The bus stank through and through with exhaust fumes. Every time he drives on a rough road, he sways me from side to side, even though I grabbed onto the seat to at least somehow hold on.

My older brother Caleb is standing in the aisle, holding onto the upper handrails, and trying to maintain his balance. We are not at all alike. He has dark hair and a hooked nose like his father, from his mother he got green eyes and dimples on his cheeks. When he was younger, it looked strange, but now these features are more suitable for him than ever. If Caleb had not been in Renunciation, I am sure that the girls in school would not have been able to take their eyes off him.

From his mother, he also inherited a talent for dedication. The brother, without hesitation for a long time, gave up his seat on the bus to a gloomy man from the Sincerity fraction.

The man was wearing a black suit with a white tie - the standard uniform of this faction. Her followers highly value honesty and share everything in black and white, so they dress like that.

The driveways between the buildings narrow and the roads become smoother when we approach the heart of the city. A black pillar appears on the horizon from the fog - this building, which used to be called the Sears Tower, is now called the Center. The bus moves over the rails. I have never been on trains, despite the fact that they are everywhere. Only fearless drive around them.

Five years ago, volunteers from the Renunciation faction re-paved some roads. They started from the center of the city and led the way outside, until the materials were over. The roads where I live are still broken and hastily patched, it is not safe to move along them. Although we don’t care, we don’t have a car.

Caleb looks calm, although the bus constantly shakes and shakes. Gray clothes fall out of his hands as he tries to keep his balance. I am sure his eyes are constantly looking at someone, he is watching people around us - he is trying to see only them, forgetting about himself. Sincerity is proud of its honesty, and our faction - Renunciation - appreciates selflessness.

Here is a stop in front of the school, and I get up, running past a member of the Sincerity faction. Clutching Caleb’s hand, I understand that I tripped over this man’s shoes. My slacks are too long, although you can't call me graceful either.

The Upper Level Building is the oldest of the three schools in the city: Lower Levels, Mid Levels and Upper Levels. Like all structures around it, it is made of glass and steel. Before him stands a large metal statue of the Fearless, towering above the school, so that we have the courage to rise higher and higher. Last year it was possible to observe how one of such brave men fell and broke his leg. I was the one who ran to call a nurse.

Today they test their abilities, ”I say.

Caleb is actually a year older than me, but, nevertheless, he studies with me in the same parallel.

Brother nods, and we pass through the front doors. I get tense when we drop by. Hunger is felt in the atmosphere, every sixteen-year-old is trying to eat as much as he could swallow in his entire life until this moment. It is likely that we will not pass this hall after the Choice Ceremony - after this, the new factions are responsible for completing our education.

Today, classes have been reduced by half, so we can all go for the tests that will be after lunch. My heart is accelerating.

It seems you are not at all worried about what they say? I ask Caleb.

We stop in the hallway, where we disperse in different ways: my brother will go to a lesson in advanced mathematics, and I - to the history of fractions.

He raises an eyebrow and asks:

I could tell him that for many weeks I didn’t stop thinking about what the ability test would point me to: Renunciation, Sincerity, Erudition, Friendliness or Fearlessness?

Instead, I smile and say:

No, actually.

He smiled back.

Okay ... then have a nice day.

I go to my office, biting my lower lip. He did not answer my question.

The corridors are very narrow, although the light penetrating through the windows creates the illusion of space; these passages are one of several places where fractions mix at our age. Today, the crowd is livelier than ever on this last day of insanity.

A girl with long curly hair waves to her friend in the distance and shouts “hello” almost in my ear. The sleeve of her jacket hits me on the cheek. Suddenly a guy from the Erudic faction in a blue sweater shoves me. I lose my balance and fall, hitting the floor painfully.

Veronica Roth's best-selling novel, The Divergent, is the first book of the eponymous series. According to the book, a film was made, which received a stunning success, which caused even greater interest in the writer’s trilogy. The book describes the events that occur after the apocalypse.

After the disaster, almost everything was destroyed, many people died. Those who survived want to prevent such a catastrophe and think how to secure their future. They decide to create a society that is clearly divided into classes, where everyone will know what he should do and what is forbidden. There are five such classes, people are divided on the basis of character traits and abilities. Each class has its own laws, rules of conduct and customs.

People who believe that all troubles are caused by lies and hypocrisy are included in the Sincerity group. Those members of the society who believe that the most important thing is education, the development of intellectual abilities belong to the Erudition group. The group "Friendliness" includes representatives who value the most kindness, mutual understanding and help. The Renunciation group consists of those who are willing to sacrifice themselves in the name of others. Those who consider fighting fears to be the most important and see this as the cause of all misfortunes are included in the Fearlessness group.

But not much time passes, and each of the groups begins to insist that their beliefs are paramount. Between them there are disputes and conflicts. The main character reaches the age of sixteen and must choose a fraction, which will be included. Tris passes the test for determination and learns that she has abilities, thanks to which she can be in any group. She is a divergent. The girl does not tell anyone about this, because they are afraid of such people.

Tris chooses Fearless. After some time, she realizes that she is unlikely to be able to pass the tests, and learns that among them there is another Divergent. Only they are not influenced and will be able to fight with those who want to seize power.

Get out, Stiff. - He literally sweeps me away, and continues down the corridor.

My cheeks are burning. I get up and brush myself off. Several people stopped and noticed my fall, but not one of them offered help. They are watching me from the other end of the corridor. This has been happening to other members of my faction for many months. The erudition published denunciatory articles about Renunciation, and this began to affect relations in the school. The gray clothes, simple hairstyle and modest behavior of my faction are supposed to make my existence easier and make me invisible, so convenient for everyone. But now everything has changed, they have made us a target.

I stopped at the window in Wing E and waiting for the Fearless to arrive soon. I do it every morning. At exactly seven hours and twenty-five minutes, the Fearless demonstrate their courage by jumping from a moving train.
