About the book “Do You Remember ...” Judith Macknot

The novel “Do You Remember,” written in 1996, is part of the so-called modern series. This is not a historical novel, the action takes place in the 90s of the last century. Diane Foster, publisher and editor of a popular women's magazine glorifying family values, has no family. She was recently abandoned by her fiance. And not just quit. The whole country learned from the newspapers that the ideal beauty Diana, who teaches other women how to do housework and maintain relationships, the groom threw almost at the altar to marry an eighteen-year-old fashion model.

Therefore, when she met a childhood friend, in whom she was a little in love with 13 years old, Cole Harrison, and he asked Diana to conclude a fictitious marriage with him, she agreed without hesitation. She is not going to start a new romantic relationship anyway. And in the eyes of fans of her magazine, she is at least a little rehabilitated. Now she is not an unhappy abandoned woman, but the wife of a successful and wealthy man.

However, a fictitious marriage cannot interfere with real feelings. And who said married people should not fall in love? If in your own spouse or spouse, then you can.

Reading Judith McNaught is always a pleasure. She has a wonderful syllable and non-banal plots, which is generally a rarity in the genre of a love story. But the book “Do you remember” differs from other works of the writer by some clarity and simplicity. Despite the fact that Diana is the idol of millions of American women, and Cole is a millionaire, they are both very real and will immediately seem familiar to you. As well as the atmosphere in which their romance develops - warm, cozy, homely. In this book there are no terrible secrets, misunderstandings, vain offenses. And although Diana and Cole at times seem too ideal, but they are friends and respect each other.

Some fans of Judith Macknot's book “Do You Remember” disappointed that there are no unearthly passions. But this is a good book. “Do you remember” is a novel about the real relationship of two adults who do not fall in love at first sight and for life, do not rush into the maelstrom of passions with their heads. In addition to love, they have work, friends, relatives, hobbies. They look at each other and try to build harmonious relationships. And passions, of course, will also be (in a love story without them in any way), but in due time.

On this page, the authors, as usual, express gratitude to all those who helped them or showed supernatural patience during the creation of the book. In the case of this novel, the writing of which took forever, there isn’t enough space to properly thank even one of the mentioned people for his invaluable help, understanding and support. I can only hope that you will understand how much you mean - and still mean - to me.

Houston 1979

Diana, are you still awake? I would like to talk to you. Diana did not turn off the nightlight and lay back on the pillows.

Good, ”she said.

How do you feel after the flight, baby? - asked her father, approaching the bed. - Tired?

Forty-three-year-old Robert Foster, a tall, broad-shouldered Houston oilman with early gray hair, usually exuded confidence. But that evening he looked clearly worried, and Diana knew why. Despite the fact that she was barely fourteen, Diana was not so stupid as to believe that her father had come to inquire about his well-being after flying on a jet liner. He was eager to talk about Diana's stepmother and stepsister, the existence of which she first learned this afternoon, returning home after a vacation in Europe with school friends.

I'm fine, ”Diana assured.

Diana ... - began the father, but was embarrassed, crouched on the edge of the bed and took his daughter's hand. After a moment, he spoke again:

You must have been surprised by my act. I beg you, believe me - I would never marry Mary if I were not absolutely sure that you would love each other. You like her, right? he asked anxiously, peering probingly into Diana's face. - You talked about it ...

The girl nodded, still wondering why her father had married so hastily. Since the death of Diana’s mother, the father met with several beautiful, pleasant women in Houston, but before that he always introduced them to his daughter and insisted that they spend some time together.

I think Mary is very sweet, ”she said with reflection. “I just don’t understand why you needed to be in such a hurry.”

Despite Robert's embarrassed look, it was impossible to doubt the sincerity of his answer.

And in your life there will be times when you forget about logic and plans, surrender to the imperious call of your inner voice. Of course, from the outside it may seem crazy. But in such situations, a person listens only to his heart.

So that was the case with you? He nodded.

Not even a few hours after I met Mary, as I understood it: I dreamed about her, and hardly seeing Corey, I lost my last doubts and believed that we, all four, would be the happiest of families. But my intuition warned: we must act decisively so that Mary does not change her mind.

Diana looked at her father in disbelief.

In my opinion, all women who know you dream about you.

No, dear, most dream of what I can give them - material security and status in society. Only a few of them need me myself.

Are you sure Mary is one of them? - asked Diana.

Robert grinned, and his eyes lit up with love.

I was absolutely sure of her and I was not mistaken.

Then why should she refuse you? Father’s lips were extended in a smile.

Because she is alien to acts of convenience, for selfish reasons. Mary is very smart, but he and Corey led a modest life in a tiny town where by the standards of Houston there are no wealthy people. Her love for me flared up swiftly and brightly, like my love for her; Mary agreed to marry me, but when she found out how we live, she almost backtracked. She was afraid that she and Corey would be out of place here, they would make some unforgivable mistake and disgrace us. And the more Mary thought about it, the more she became convinced that she would let us down.

Reaching out, Robert gently pushed a strand of shiny brown hair from Diana's cheek.

Just imagine: Mary neglected all the material goods that I could give her - and only because she cared about our reputation. This is very important for her.

Diana immediately liked the new stepmother, but her father's reverent attitude towards Mary was another proof for the girl.

I really liked Mary, ”admitted Diana. A joyful smile lit up his face.

So I thought. And she liked you. Mary said that you are very sweet and restrained. She noticed that you had the right to have a tantrum when you entered the house and ran into a stepmother whom I had never heard of before. Wait, you will meet new grandparents! he added enthusiastically.

Cory said they were just lovely, ”Diana answered, recalling everything she had learned from her thirteen-year-old half-sister.

And there is. These are decent, honest, hardworking people who know how to enjoy life and love each other deeply. Grandfather Corey is an excellent gardener, inventor and skilled carpenter, and grandmother is an artistic person, a talented needlewoman. And now, ”he continued, straining slightly again,“ admit what you think of Corey. ”

Diana was silent for a minute, trying to put her feelings into words, then leaned forward, put her arms around her knees and smiled:

She is not at all like my friends girls. She is ... affable, honest, sincere. Besides Texas, she has never been anywhere; Corey is very impulsive, but in her life there were many such events about which I have no idea. And then, she considers you almost a king! - with a grin added Diana.

What a clever and insightful lady!

Father left them when Corey was still very young, ”Diana said sadly.

His stupidity and irresponsibility turned into my luck, and I will do my best to make Mary and Corey happy too. Will you help me with this? he asked, rising and smiling at his daughter.

Diana nodded.

Of course!

Just don’t forget: Corey was deprived of many of the advantages you enjoyed. So do not rush and try to insure her.

Okay, I'll try.

This is what my daughter says! Bowing, Robert kissed the top of her head. “You and Mary will be good friends.”

He was about to leave when Diana’s calm statement made him freeze and turn around.

Corey wants to call you dad.

That’s how, ”Robert Foster answered in a hoarse voice with excitement. - Mary and I hoped that someday this would happen, but I thought that Corey would take a long time to decide on such a step. - He looked into the face of his daughter, and then embarrassedly asked:

How do you feel about this?

Diana grinned:

That was my idea.

In a room on the opposite side of the corridor, Mary Britton-Foster sat at the bedside of her thirteen-year-old daughter, talking to her before going to bed.

Did you have a good time today with Diana? - For the third time she asked Corey.

Did you have fun at the Haywards orphanage? Did you like to ride a horse?

Mom, we are all teenagers, not children.

Sorry, ”Mary answered, absently stroking Corey.

And then, this community does not at all resemble a "children's house" - it was the size of a decent motel!

So big? - mockingly teased Mary. Corey nodded.

Yes, almost the same as our house. The fact that she called the house of Diana and Robert “our house” inspired Mary with confidence.

So the Haywards have an extension at their home?

Yes, it is called a stable, but it is rather a barn that looks like a beautiful stone house from the outside. They even have a guy who lives in a stable and takes care of horses. His name is Cole. Girls consider him darling. He had just arrived from college ... I forgot which one, but it seems that this college is located somewhere here in Houston.
